What is carob?
Have you ever wonder what carob is? Well here’s a few facts to hopefully explain it better and explain why we use them in some of our treats. Carob looks very similar to chocolate but it’s actually safe for dogs! We all know that chocolate is poisonous to animals, but there’s no reason why your pup can’t enjoy carob. Not only does carob not contain caffeine or the theobromine that makes chocolate so deadly for dogs, but it actually has many healthy properties. On top of that, it’s also free of formamide, or phenylethylamine, other dangerous substances found in chocolate. Carob is extracted from the carob bean that grows on the carob tree, a type of flowering shrub which belongs to the same family as peas (Fabaceae). Like cocoa beans, carob beans can be ground into a powder that can be used as-is or made into carob chips. Boasting a naturally sweet flavor, similar to chocolate, carob also contains a variety of healthy nutrients such as vitamins A, B, and D as well as calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, and protein. If that’s not enough to get you to try this delish treat, carob is a good source of fiber and pectin (a substance that helps to flush toxins from the body).Hopefully that helps explain why carob is used so often in dog treats. It’s natural and yummy! Which is what Crazy Mutt Treats is all about.
